Jan 3: Treat

“treat of” (dated) To deal with (a subject)

So I shall treat of dated things
and archaisms
and rich expressions

coming from my father’s father’s youth
and some beyond

when folk were poor in things
[and ‘treats’ were rare]
but rich in words

and fluent in the use
if not the theory
of transitive, intransitive
and – as the poet wrote –
an modh foshuiteach
is an tuiseal gairmeach
lived
ar bhéalaimh daoine

when going for treatment
spelled the end.

And let them call me dated
and treat me with uneasy pity
and treat me to uneasy glances

I still shall treat of dated things
